How to Make YouTube Thumbnails That People Actually Click
By Jameel Khan | October 20 2026
I used to have all of the time in the world to make, edit, and upload videos to my YouTube channel. But when I would publish… I would just sit there… waiting… for "something"… Out of 10 views, maybe 8 views came from friends. I was totally lost.
And then I had an epiphany. They were the worst. They were random screenshots of the video. There was no way people would want to click on that. Your thumbnail on YouTube is like the cover of a book. If it looks boring then no one will bother reading it no matter how good the story is.
Reasons Your Thumbnails Might Not Be Working
I see many beginners go wrong. They have loads of copy on the image. No one wants to read ten words on a phone screen. Keep it snappy. And if the colors are rubbish and dull, people will just keep scrolling. You only get a second to grab their attention.
My Simple 3 Rules
- Say as little as possible. Use no more than three or four words. More is not better!
- Pop it out: Colors. If the background is dark use white to write.
- Show a face. People like faces. If you can insert your face in the picture and you can have an expression of happiness or anger. It's magic.
Avoid Wasting Money on Photoshop
I used to pay for Adobe software. It's far too costly when you first start out. I developed the Tool Kit Pro Thumbnail Creator so I can do it all quickly in my browser. Upload a photo, zoom it out a little, add some bold text then download. Simple. Very quick. Saves loads of time.
Just try spending ten minutes on your thumbnail next time. You will see a difference in clicks I promise.
